Get ready, JOTA in two weeks time.
The logo for JOTA 2009:

The official dutch opening of the JOTA is streamed @: http://stream1.jota-joti.nl:8000/listen.pls
Interference by the WAG contest.
During the JOTA weekend there is unfortunately one contest (amateur radio competition). It is an exception to the agreement that there will be no contests during the JOTA weekend. However, an agreement has been reached with the organizers of this German WAG contest on the use of amateur radio frequencies during the JOTA in such a way that it allows both events to operate in parallel. This worked satisfactorily last year, so we would like to continue it for this years' JOTA as well. The German contest stations will not operate in the following segments (called "contest-free zone"):
80 m 3650 - 3700 kHz
40 m 7080 - 7140 kHz
20 m 14100 - 14125 and 14280 - 14350 kHz
15 m 21350 - 21450 kHz
10 m 28225 - 28400 kHz
There is no contest traffic on the 17, 12 and 6 m bands. This leaves all World Scout Frequencies in the clear. Scout stations may use the whole of each amateur radio band. But if you experience any interference from the WAG contest, please move to the segments listed above to enjoy an interference free contact.

Finally, sunspots. The cycle begins,...or not.
Sunspots are important to some ham-radio operators. There are many or few sunspots depending on the state of the 11 year sunspot cycle. At least, thats what we all thought. For the last few years the sun was having a break and sunspots where not seen.
The sun stopped with her cycle at the lowest point and nothing could be done but wait in awe.

Finally after many spotless years the sun spotted again.
With all spots being near the equator, they must all be cycle 23 spots. A cycle 24 spot would be at a much higher latitude.
So are we seeing the old cycle(23) or the new one(24)?
Check out the sun real-time to find out if you can spot a sunspot.

JOTA 2007 log
This was the 50th JOTA. This golden-jubilee JOTA was 2 hours longer so instead of 48 hours its been 50 hours of PC1MH/J. The operators where Hugh PC1H, Paul PC1RBX, Marc PC1MH. Bands where very active and conditions where good. There where 2 shacks with HF and VHF. The main shack was set up with a Kenwood TS-570DG and a vertical GPA about 6 meters long and the ability to 'hot' switch to a diagonal G5RV . The secondary shack was set up with an Icom IC706MK2 and a 42 meter dipole antenna.

New extra transceiver for the JOTA

Hi fellow radionauts,
I bought a second hand HF transceiver last week. Its a Kenwood TS-520.
The TS-520 is 40 years old and has 4 bands, 10, 20, 40 and 80 metres. It is in perfect condition. It will be used as a second transceiver for the JOTA that takes place in one week time.
The TS-520 has valves and no modern electronics so if it fails it can be repaired without too many problems.
During the rest of the year it will be used by other members of the JOTA crew.
Marc
